Last weekend’s Double Ree Youth event was about much more than who took home the prizes. MYC won plenty, but there was a lot more on offer. Racing amongst 4 different two-handed dinghies, 57 boats, 114 sailors, camping, sausages, swimming, ordering pizza at midnight, capsizing to cool down and having someone to sail with, to share the laughs and stresses that come with dinghy racing.
MYC had 12 boats at the event, 7 420s, 2 Feva’s, Philip Watson’s barge, the Natin’s cruiser and the Anglims on their Shannon rental – did they make it back yet?
Garrett Leech and the team at Lough Ree Yacht Club had an idea and pulled it off with great success. No easy task to get 4 competing classes to come together. It was also a great opportunity for some single-handed sailors to enjoy the sociability of double handed boats.
Well done to the 4 Associations for agreeing to do this:
John Mcgonigle – Mirror Class
Chris Shackleton – Feva Class
David McDowell – 420 Class
Jarlath O’Leary – 29er Class
Long may the classes cooperate to hold these events together and collectively to generate a buzz and sense of fun and competitiveness around double handed sailing.
Congrats to Gemma and Emma, Liam and Aidan, and James and Timmy on their victories. Full results here: https://www.lryc.ie/double-ree-results/
