Read moreHowth RNLI is raising funds for new state-of-the-art lifejackets to be worn by our volunteer lifeboat crew. Incorporating the latest material technology, the new lifejackets have been designed in collaboration with the RNLI and the manufacturer Crewsaver, specifically to meet the charity’s requirements. They are a far cry from the cork lifejackets invented by RNLI Inspector Captain Ward in 1854. The new ones are fitted with water-activated emergency lights and pockets for day and night distress flares.

The RNLI’s nationwide S.O.S. Day on Friday 27th January was marked in Malahide Yacht Club with a special dinner at St. James’ Terrace, which proved to be a major success both socially and financially.
Superbly organised by Rose Michael and Irene Devitt, the event attracted over 80 members and friends who enjoyed a top-class 3-course dinner prepared by the Club’s chef Sally Anne Lukyx.
The dinner also generated over €500 for the RNLI Howth Lifeboat and will go towards the cost of new state-of-the-art lifejackets specially designed by the RNLI for its crews.

IODAI, the International Optimist Dinghy Association of Ireland, organises a Spring training week every year which is open to all Optimist sailors in Ireland.
Baltimore in West Cork sits near the very southern tip of Ireland on the beautiful southwest coast roughly mid-way between the busy tourist destination of Dingle and Kinsale. Slightly off the tourist trail, Baltimore has retained a village atmosphere, but it still has plenty of top class accommodation and a great place to eat and drink.
The village of Baltimore will be taken over by approximately 150 sailors and their families for the week of February mid-term. Coaches have not yet been announced, but typically are a mix of the top Irish and international coaches; in 2011, the Irish coaches were joined by coaches from Denmark, Spain and Italy.

In September 2011 MYC successfully staged its first open one-design keelboat event when it hosted the J24 Eastern Championship with sponsorship from Malahide Marina.
The Championship was something of a dress rehearsal for Irish entries in the BMW J24 Europeans at Howth (Sept.12-15), but the second day of the event was hampered by bad weather which prevented racing (as well as the Pirates being forced to stay ashore!). Four good races on the Saturday however, with courses set by PRO Neil Murphy, produced competitive racing with four different race winners.

Broadmeadows Redevelopment Fundraising Update
Thanks to the generous contributions by individuals and businesses to the brick-in-the-wall fund-raising drive (which realised over €10,000), those who supported the Prize Draw (which also raised €10,000) and other activities such as the Table Quiz series, over €30,000 has been raised towards the €50,000 target.
In a relatively short space of time, that is a considerable achievement and it is hoped that members will continue to support other fund-raising initiatives planned for the year ahead as we attempt to further reduce the shortfall!
