Malahide Yacht Club is unique among sailing clubs in Ireland and the British Isles in that it is the only one with
two separate sailing waters and two clubhouses to cater for dinghy and keelboat sailing and racing.

Lower Estuary

As a natural inlet opening into a large stretch of water between Lambay Island and Howth Head, it is hardly surprising that Malahide’s Lower Estuary would be considered an ideal location for sailing.

Sailing-Boat-With-Spinaker-Flying

Although tides can restrict access to the Estuary at various times of the day and night, boat-owners make the most of the conditions, whether it is racing or cruising, using a well-buoyed channel.

MYC members who own cruisers (keelboats) have the option of renting swinging moorings in the channel or fully-serviced berths in Malahide Marina.

Racing is organised (depending on tides) on IRC and ECHO Handicap systems during the sailing season and MYC boats also compete successfully at open events at other clubs during the year.

A Cruising Section organises leisure sailing and ‘Day Sails’ to local islands and harbours (and further afield) while fostering good seamanship and safety.

Members seeking to crew on a keelboat should contact the Sailing Secretary (Lower Estuary) and/or the Cruising Section Secretary listed on the Contacts Page.

Upper Estuary

MYC is delighted to announce the official opening of its new Dinghy clubhouse at the Broadmeadows on 11 March 2012.

420-Sailing-Dinghy-Malahide-Estuary

The 2012 sailing season is surely going to be one of the best for many years and we are looking forward to new members joining us to make the most of our new clubhouse and enjoy the wonderful safe sailing waters that are available to us 24/7.

We sail Optimists, Topaz’s, Laser’s and 420’s and have a fleet of more than 12 club boats available for members to use. We run extensive junior training courses from April onwards and also are planning a number of adult dinghy courses this year, starting with a Ladies course in May.

On the water this year we are planning to be very active in our various dinghy classes with Regatta’s, Regional Championships and a National Championship being run this summer.

The season starts on 14 April in 2012 and we race every Saturday and every Thursday night (from 17 May).

It’s not all about racing and every Tuesday night from June to the end of August, the club will be open and rescue on hand for all members who want to go for a relaxing sail away from the competitive racers.

We have something for everybody, so please come and join us!

Fun Events

In addition to the Club’s Racing and Cruising Programmes, a number of Fun Events – now annual fixtures on the MYC calendar – are organised each year. These include:

Wicklow Vase

An all-classes race out at sea, dinghies and keelboats together.

Rockabill Rally

An opportunity for the cruising enthusiasts to ‘race’ against the ‘racers’ with a specially devised handicap system.

Ireland's Eye BBQ

The cruising section head off for the day and organise a BBQ on the neighbouring island.

Wide Water Day

fun and frolics on the Broadmeadows for the younger members, with novelty events afloat and lots of prizes.

Pirates' Day

Boats and crews dress appropriately in pirate style for a treasure hunt with a difference – clues are both ashore and afloat.

Learn to sail (Adults)

A number of commercial sailing schools operate locally and MYC also organises introductory adult courses, subject to demand. The best way to learn is to get afloat and many owners/skippers are happy to offer a place on their crew to new members or dinghy sailors wishing to broaden their experience.

Learn to sail (Juniors)

Junior training courses have been a feature of MYC for almost 50 years and every summer, the Junior Affairs Officer organises courses to meet demand. Using qualified Sailing Instructors, the courses are Irish Sailing Association-approved and follow a progression from complete beginners (Level 1) to advanced (Level 4).
Applications can be made through the Junior Affairs Officer (see Home Page) and are accepted subject to certain conditions
