Cadet Laser Sailors being put to the test!

Laser Coaching at MYC

Laser Coaching at MYC
Our laser coaching got off to a great start on Saturday 4th May with 17 sailors taking part from Malahide YC, HYC and SSBC.
Conor O’Beirne from RSGYC took the first group of 8 cadets out into a chilly 17 knot north easterly wind blowing onshore making launching a little tricky. They quickly warmed up as he put them through their paces on a short windward leeward course to asses their boat handling skills before taking the group on a series of upwind and downwind legs on the estuary over the course of 3 hours. Colm Roche meanwhile took the beginner group through some of the finer points of laser rigging and once the wind dropped off they too got out on the water to get to grips with the joy of laser sailing.
In the afternoon many of the cadets stayed on and took part in the weekly Club racing to put into practice what they had learned that morning while Conor took a group of more experienced adults out to work on their skills and upwind and downwind technique.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and took a lot away from them and are looking forward to the next couple of weeks with Conor and Colm. In addition to the Saturday coaching we hope to run further coaching on Sundays and with the assistance of the Irish Laser Association we plan to organise some further sessions later in the summer. Details will be posted on the MYC website or contact the laser class captain Jonathan Boyle at to express interest.

See you all on the water
