It is with deep regret that we must announce the passing of our Club President, Roger Greene, on Thursday 17th September, after a short illness.
One of the leading driving forces of MYC, Roger was Commodore in 1998-99, was elected President in 2006 and was heavily involved in many of the Club’s development programmes (such as the SJT extension in 2003).
He first sailed at the Boyne SC at Mornington and joined Malahide Sailing Club (as it was called then) in 1971, racing Enterprises, Lasers and Mermaids before moving into keelboats with the Hunter 19 fleet. He later owned several keelboats and cruised extensively. He crewed (and helmed) until recently on his son David’s Elan 33 ‘White Pearl’ in the club racing series.
Outside of sailing, Roger had been an accomplished canoeist and, in the past, won the famous Liffey Descent Race three times in a row.
Highly regarded as a local historian, he wrote the book ‘Around and About in Malahide’ and then in 2012 ‘Old Malahide’. He was also a long-standing office-holder of the Malahide Historical Society.
On behalf of all the members, I extend our sympathies to his wife Claire (pictured with Roger), son David, daughter-in-law Sarah and grandchildren Nathan and Charlotte. He will be sadly missed.
