What is different about this year’s Summer Training?

We are changing the way in which we use our Summer training to become a development programme for our junior sailors. We will be facilitating junior training and development for 10 months of the year with a focus during Summer of confirming progression through Irish Sailing levels.

Can I book my child onto 2 or more courses?

Generally, booking onto 2 or more courses over one season is not allowed, particularly for those that are Level 2+. To get the most out of our training courses it is recommended that participants are sailing regularly between levels to ensure they are competent. This ensures our sailors get the most out of their training and in the long run produces better and more competent MYC sailors! In some cases it may be suitable for a participant to complete two courses over one season.

What is Adventure week?

Adventure week aims to build up the seamanship skills of our sailors through different sailing challenges that your sailor will likely never have encountered before. It is suitable for participants aged 12-16 years and will focus on skills not typically covered in Irish Sailing courses. Please note that sailors must have completed Level 2 to attend course

What previous knowledge and experience is required for Irish Sailing Courses?

Start Sailing (Level 1) - No experience required
Basic Skills (Level 2) - Must have completed Start Sailing
Improving Skills (Level 3) - Must have logged 10 hours after passing Basic Skills Advanced levels (Level 4) - Must have logged 20 hours after Improving Skills or their last completed advanced level

Can I do a course if I do not have the required previous knowledge and experience?

No, if you do not have the required levels or logged hours for a given course you cannot enroll for that course. This is to ensure everyone who enrolls in a level is at a similar standard which in turn will contribute to a much more positive learning experience for everyone.

Can I rent a club boat for the Summer training courses?

Participants enrolled in Cara Na Mara or Start Sailing (Level 1) may opt to rent a club boat for use throughout the summer course. All other levels with the exception of Kites and Wires must have their own boat or use of a boat for their Summer training course. If you are struggling to find a boat contact Training Officer (training@myc.ie) and they will put you in touch with one of the class captains who will at the very least be able to point you in the right direction.

What is coaching week?

Coaching week has been introduced to allow sailors to practice and hone their skills. It may also serve as another opportunity to tick off some skills that your sailor may have been deferred on. The groups will be split based on experience and our group of instructors will ensure everyone can work on and improve everything from race strategies to close haul sailing
