IODAI, the International Optimist Dinghy Association of Ireland, organises a Spring training week every year which is open to all Optimist sailors in Ireland.
Baltimore in West Cork sits near the very southern tip of Ireland on the beautiful southwest coast roughly mid-way between the busy tourist destination of Dingle and Kinsale. Slightly off the tourist trail, Baltimore has retained a village atmosphere, but it still has plenty of top class accommodation and a great place to eat and drink.
The village of Baltimore will be taken over by approximately 150 sailors and their families for the week of February mid-term. Coaches have not yet been announced, but typically are a mix of the top Irish and international coaches; in 2011, the Irish coaches were joined by coaches from Denmark, Spain and Italy.

In September 2011 MYC successfully staged its first open one-design keelboat event when it hosted the J24 Eastern Championship with sponsorship from Malahide Marina.
The Championship was something of a dress rehearsal for Irish entries in the BMW J24 Europeans at Howth (Sept.12-15), but the second day of the event was hampered by bad weather which prevented racing (as well as the Pirates being forced to stay ashore!). Four good races on the Saturday however, with courses set by PRO Neil Murphy, produced competitive racing with four different race winners.

This amount is critical to match the bank loan and club reserved funds. Initial preparation work is well underway at the site. Please do your best to support the various fundraising efforts and help develop this much needed resource for the club. The quiz nights have been a rip roaring success and have provided great fun nights in the clubhouse. The raffle is underway and we hope you are making great progress in selling those tickets. There is also an ambitious "sponsor a brick" scheme - ask the Commodore about this! Watch out for other exciting fund raising initiatives in coming months!

Read moreLast Saturday’s Wicklow Vase Race, which neatly coincided with Malahide Festival to attract hundreds of onlookers and passers-by, attracted a record entry of 33 boats, with 20 dinghies coming down from the Broadmeadows to battle it out with 13 cruisers.
And in near-perfect conditions, it was the dinghies which dominated proceedings, with Lizzie McDowell and her cousin Gemma in a 420 winning the annual race by nearly two minutes on corrected time from Orlagh Thompson in a Laser Radial rig and last year’s winner Conor Costello (in a Laser full rig) taking third spot.
Indeed, Lasers filled the first nine places overall, with Chris Shackleton’s J24 ‘Johnny Bravo’ the first keelboat on corrected time in 10th place.
In a separately-handicapped Festival Trophy, Brian Stewart’s 21-footer ‘Mon Read more
The annual Wicklow Vase Race – where dinghies and keelboats race together out at sea – will this year (Saturday 23rd July) coincide with Malahide Festival in a nautical feature called ‘Malahide Afloat’, devised by MYC and involving a three-way collaboration with Malahide Sea Scouts and Malahide Marina, as the organisations most closely associated with our town’s most natural resource.
In what is a loose-knit arrangement, the three groups are hosting activities which amply demonstrate Malahide’s marine ties and so encourage even greater usage of the town’s marine-based facilities and its renowned seaside setting. It promises to be a day of vivid colour and frenetic activity afloat.
MYC’s Wicklow Vase Race starts at 3pm on Saturday...

At the gun a number of 'racers' popped their spinnakers and headed straight for the Rock in a fresh balmy broad reach. The rest of the fleet followed at a more leisurely pace. However, after rounding the lighthouse the long beat home against the tide made for tiring , but enjoyable, work in sometimes gusty conditions.
The 'racers' were home in about four hours with the rest of the fleet well spread out behind. Some tacked inshore, others out to sea and two left Lambay to starboard. Several admitted to using their engines for the final stages. Several Howth Sailing & boating Club members participated including one single-hander.

Broadmeadows Redevelopment Fundraising Update
Thanks to the generous contributions by individuals and businesses to the brick-in-the-wall fund-raising drive (which realised over €10,000), those who supported the Prize Draw (which also raised €10,000) and other activities such as the Table Quiz series, over €30,000 has been raised towards the €50,000 target.
In a relatively short space of time, that is a considerable achievement and it is hoped that members will continue to support other fund-raising initiatives planned for the year ahead as we attempt to further reduce the shortfall!
