An Evening with Joanne Donnelly – Kicking Off Our Autumn Series
Malahide Yacht Club is delighted to launch our Autumn series of talks with a very special guest: Joanne Donnelly, one of Ireland’s most familiar and respected weather forecasters, on Wednesday 10 September at 8:00pm.
Joanne has been a trusted voice on Irish weather for over three decades. After studying Applied Mathematics at DCU, she joined Met Éireann in 1995, where she first worked as a meteorological officer before becoming a forecaster and meteorologist in 2000. Many will know her from RTÉ Radio 1 broadcasts from 2002 onwards and as a regular presenter on RTÉ Television from 2015 to 2025.
Alongside her broadcasting career, Joanne has been an enthusiastic champion of science education. She has spent over 15 years delivering outreach talks to schools, clubs and colleges, inspiring the next generation as a STEM ambassador and serving as a long-standing judge at the RDS Science Blast. She is also an award-winning author, with two acclaimed titles published by Gill Books:
- The Great Irish Weather Book – an accessible, beautifully illustrated guide that has become a favourite in homes and classrooms across Ireland.
- From Malin Head to Mizen Head: A Journey Around the Sea Area Forecast – her most recent work, exploring the unique character and stories of Ireland’s coastal waters.
On the night, Joanne will share insights from her 30 years in forecasting, helping us understand how charts, models and sea breezes translate into the conditions we experience on the water. Her talk will be practical and engaging, with plenty of advice for sailors, sea-goers, and anyone interested in making sense of Ireland’s famously changeable skies. A lively Q&A session will follow, giving attendees the chance to ask their own questions.
And as Joanne herself puts it: “My books make a great Christmas present!” Copies will be available to purchase after the talk.
